WBG support was expansive in FY19, with WBG-supported activities reaching well over one billion beneficiaries during the year across the full range of sectors. For example, World Bank support helped nearly 20 million people receive social safety net benefits, while WBG support reached over 100 million people with transportation services, electricity services, financial services, and sanitation services, and over 200 million people with ICT services and health, nutrition, and population services.

With an emphasis on upstream challenges like strengthening national policies and building institutions, the WBG tailors its support to help client countries address their own specific challenges to achieving the twin goals and SDGs. The breadth and depth of this support—not always easy to quantify or aggregate—goes well beyond the topline statistics.

For example, the World Bank helped Cambodia create sustainable government institutions for health care management that has ultimately improved the quality and equity of its health services, and the country now provides 2 million free visits per year for the poorest Cambodians.

In Argentina, the World Bank helped the government strengthen the country’s road safety management capacity, resulting in significant reductions in road accidents and fatalities in targeted areas, and institutionalizing policies to coordinate the agenda nationally.

And in Somalia, the World Bank responded rapidly to the third devastating drought in two decades and working with partners was able to help the government avoid famine and triple the number of households able to consume at least two meals per day
